In industries where equipment experiences constant abrasion, surface wear can quickly degrade the lifespan of critical components. At Manluk, we’re proud to provide our customers with valuable solutions to help solve the challenges posed by increased exposure to abrasion, including reliable protection methods like High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) coatings. As a highly durable thermal spray, HVOF creates a hard surface layer that does not compromise the base material, providing superior protection and minimal distortion.Learn more below!

What is HVOF Coating

HVOF is a hard-facing process that uses a high-velocity gas stream to apply a thin, dense layer of tungsten carbide onto the component. Unlike weld overlays, the coating does not fuse directly with the steel, but bonds with the surface instead.

How it works:

  1. A fuel gas and oxygen mixture is ignited to create a high-velocity jet.
  2. Tungsten carbide powder is fed into the jet.
  3. The particles accelerate toward the surface at extremely high speeds.
  4. The coating mechanically bonds to the steel, forming a dense and uniform layer.

The result is a very thin, extremely hard surface that protects the part from abrasive wear while maintaining excellent dimensional accuracy.

What Gives HVOF Coatings Their Strength

The strength of HVOF comes from two main factors:

1. High particle velocity

The carbide particles strike the surface at supersonic speeds, compacting tightly and forming a dense coating.

2. Low heat input

The relatively low heat used in HVOF reduces porosity and prevents distortion, allowing the base material to stay stable and form a clean, stable coating.

Best For Low Impact

While HVOF coatings offer exceptional hardness and wear resistance, it’s essential to note that they’re not designed for high-impact scenarios. Because the coating forms a mechanical bond, it does not absorb shock or heavy loading the same way welded layers can.

HVOF is best suited for:

When impact is expected, a welded tungsten carbide overlay is usually the better choice.

Where HVOF Coatings Provide the Most Value

HVOF coatings are ideal for components that need a thin, extremely hard layer without changing their geometry. Common applications include:

Properly applied HVOF coatings help reduce:

Built for Precision Wear Protection

At Manluk, we recommend HVOF when our clients need a highly durable surface layer that doesn’t distort the base material. HVOF coatings are a powerful tool, and when applied correctly, they deliver long-lasting performance in demanding industrial settings. For the right application, they provide some of the best wear protection available.
