At Manluk, we design and manufacture parts that must perform in some of the world’s toughest environments. With a diverse clientele that includes those in the oil and gas sector as well as the heavy industrial world, we understand that our customers require solutions that can withstand constant wear, high pressure, and demanding conditions.

Tungsten carbide is a valuable resource that helps extend the life of critical components, enhancing operational efficiency and minimizing disruptions by supporting machine coating and wear protection. Learn more about the benefits of tungsten carbide below!

What Makes Tungsten Carbide Different

Like its name suggests, tungsten carbide is a compound made from tungsten and carbon. It is extremely dense and firm, far harder than typical steels used in industrial equipment. In high-wear environments, this composition enables it to last up to 200 times longer than mild steel, while also absorbing impact far better than other alloys.

Due to its heavy-duty qualities, tungsten carbide is widely used in applications where parts are subjected to constant abrasion, friction, or erosion. It protects against the types of wear that weaken equipment, shorten maintenance cycles, and lead to unexpected shutdowns, which cost you time and money. At Manluk, we’re proud to use tungsten carbide in applications where equipment benefits from the guarantee of long-term performance and consistency.

At Manluk, we focus on utilizing tungsten carbide in applications where our clients require consistent performance and extended equipment life. It enables us to design components that remain in service longer and maintain tight tolerances, even after prolonged use.

How We Apply Tungsten Carbide at Manluk

One of the most effective ways to use tungsten carbide is through a weld overlay. At Manluk, we use Plasma Transferred Arc welding, also known as PTA welding, to apply carbide to the surface of steel components.

PTA welding uses a controlled plasma arc to fuse tungsten carbide particles directly into the surface of a part. Instead of sitting on top like a thin coating, the carbide becomes bonded to the steel beneath it. This creates a strong, durable surface with superior wear resistance.

PTA overlays offer several key benefits, including:

By utilizing in-house PTA welding, Manluk maintains full control over the quality, accuracy, and timing of every project for results you can count on.

Why Tungsten Carbide Matters

Modern machining requires a balance of accuracy, efficiency, and durability. In many cases, the weakness of a part does not stem from how it was machined, but from how quickly it wears out once it is in use. Tungsten carbide helps solve issues with premature wear and tear by slowing the rate of erosion and protecting the underlying steel. This leads to:

We know that every extra hour of uptime matters, and tungsten carbide overlays help ensure that your systems continue to operate smoothly when it matters most.

Built to Perform, Built to Last
